I spotted Lapse, an Australian short film about a cleaner getting lost in a mental institution, on Shortfilms.com. It’s an enjoyable, dark thriller which features only four actors.

It’s combination of dark green colours and chillingly empty corridor shots transport you to the rather scary world of an after hours hospital. The ideas of mistaken identity and wrongly being imprisoned also resonated with me.

An enjoyable film that I think is well worth 10 minutes of your time. Check out the making of once you’re finished, I found it interesting that they planned to delete all the footage off the memory card the moment they had it on hard drives. Brave guys!

This is one of the first short films that really made me sit up and take notice of the medium as a storytelling platform. It’s a brutally simple, sweet tale of a man trying to get over the heartache of breaking up with the woman he loves.

The content is quite similar to another film I talked about ‘Can We Talk‘. The style of the film is however, completely different. I love the lighting, the intimacy of the shaky cam and I love the flat setting.

The film has won a load of short film awards and I see a promising future for the creators at Sabi Pictures. I’d also like to commend both John T Woods and Marion Kerr for two excellent performances. My understanding from their website is that they also helped contribute alongside the director, Zak Forsman, to the storyline.

This science fiction film is slightly too long for my tastes but kept me interested to see where it would take me. I love the concept, that our only way to survive on a polluted planet is to connect ourselves to a partner and breathe cyclically.

The film is at it’s best in the tense moments as they are being watched by a man running out of oxygen but it runs out of air as we near the end. The ensuing struggle and conclusion is not entirely satisfying however, and I was left feeling like they could have done something more with this rather eery concept.
